Traditional Bhang (Hemp) Chutney from Uttarakhand [Recipe]

Hemp is locally called as bhang in the state of Uttarakhand, don't confuse it with the drug hemp. Both types of hemp are different, the consumable hemp is grown in the state of Uttarakhand and is a part of their food life. Today I will share the recipe of bhang ki chutney with you.

It is one of the best and less know to the world recipe. So without any wait, let's see how you can make Uttarakhand special traditional style bhang ki chutney. 

Hemp (bhang) seeds chutney

Did I forget to mentions that with fitters, Bhaang ki chutney is my personal favourite? Let's start with the ingredients. 


5 tablespoon Hemp seeds or bhang ke daane  

2 green chillies

4 tablespoon lemon juice (You can add more if you like it sourer as I do)

3 tablespoon mint leaves chopped 

1 tablespoon Coriander leaves chopped 

Water as required 

Salt as per taste 


  • Dry roast Hemp/bhang seeds in tawa till the seeds start to crackle. 
  • Turn off the flame and let the bhang (hemp) seeds cool. 
  • Add all the ingredients in a grinder and grind till it becomes a fine paste. 
  • Add water as per the requirement. 
  • You can add more lemon juice according to your taste. 
  • Chutney is ready to serve.  

Enjoy this tasty and tangy bhang ki chutney with anything and everything from chapati, rice to snacks like fitters and samosa. This speciality of Uttarakhand is less known to people outside the state, but I will keep sharing these less known amazing in taste recipes from the land of Gods.
